Explosives Camp

Rising high school juniors and seniors (must be 16 years of age)

At Explosives Camp you will get the unique opportunity to have hands-on learning experience with explosives:  the first and only camp of its kind! 

The program will comprise a variety of lectures, demonstrations, handling and shooting of explosives, field trips, projects and culminate in the setup and shooting of a fireworks display. It will encompass detonators, high explosives, blasting agents, rock blasting, display fireworks and demolition. You will have a behind-the-scenes look at how explosives are used in industry and in entertainment. But the number one thing that you will do at the Summer Explosives Camp is have fun!

What Will I Learn?

Ever wonder how dynamite works? How about fireworks? At Explosives Camp, you will not only learn how these things work, you will be able to get hands-on experience from experts like Dr. Paul Worsey, lead instructor and co-host of “The Detonators” on the Discovery Channel.  You will learn:

  • How to prime and shoot dynamite
  • Safety precautions when handling explosives
  • Where explosives are used
  • How to learn about explosives at college
  • What careers are available that are explosive-related
  • How underground blasts work
  • How pyrotechnics are used in special effects
  • How to set up and shoot off a fireworks display
  • And much more!!

You will have the opportunity to go on various field trips, including a field trip to view underground blasting operations, a quarry field trip to view surface blasting, and a trip to Premier Pyrotechnics to go on a pyrotechnics tour. The ratio of trained staff per camper is 1 to 5.

Eligibility:  Each session of Explosives Camp is limited to 20 students who will be entering 11th or 12th grade in Fall 2010, and who are interested in enrolling at Missouri S&T. Students must be at least 16 years of age by the first day of camp.

Application Process:  This camp requires an application. The application deadline is TBA. To apply, send the following to the address at the right:

  2. 250 word essay on "Why I am interested in a career focusing on the application of explosives..."
  3. A letter of recommendation from a high school teacher or counselor

We will notify accepted students by email or mail around May 1, 2010.

Fees & Registration:  $1,300, which includes room and board. DO NOT send the registration fee with your application. The fee will only need to be paid if you are accepted to one of the camps. Camp open to U.S. residents only (Canadian residents must get ATF relief prior to application).

Cancellation Policy:  Missouri S&T reserves the right to cancel any program in the event of insufficient registrations, severe weather or natural disaster. In the event of cancellation, registrants will be notified immediately via email and phone, and all fees will be returned in full. Persons wishing to cancel their registration must do so one week (7 full days) prior to the first day of their chosen program. No refunds will be made after this date.
