Missouri MESA:

MATHEMATICS, ENGINEERING, SCIENCE ACHIEVEMENT

Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) is a college-preparation program that strives to increase the number of ethnic minority, low-income, and first-generation college-bound students who are eligible to enter a degree program at a university.

Missouri MESA is administered at Normandy High School and Middle School in St. Louis. The Missouri University of Science and Technology is the host institution providing direct support in the way of budget support, helping establish hands-on curriculum in the classroom and professional development opportunities for teachers, as well as providing Missouri S&T summer opportunities for students and teachers.

Founded in 1976 at the University of California-Berkeley, it was originally a partnership between an engineering professor and a math teacher at Oakland Technical High School who were responding to the alarmingly low number of under-represented students in engineering classes at the university.

MESA is now in 11 states, with Missouri coming on board in 2002.
