Minority Introduction to Technology & Engineering (MITE)

2008 Sessions:
June 1-6 and June 15-20 

If you are a rising junior or senior this summer who is interested in a career in engineering, mathematics, science or technology, this one-week program is designed for you.

You will become acquainted with the various technological degrees that Missouri University of Science & Technology has to offer and what demands people face in these fields.

This is also a great opportunity for you to get a taste of university life and learn what it takes to succeed in college.

Minority students for this program include African American, Native American and Hispanic American.

PROGRAM PARTICULARS

The program will be held on the campus of the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, Mo., 100 miles west of St. Louis.

Thirty students will be selected for each of two sessions. The cost is typically $150, which includes all room and board.

Students are selected based on a combination of GPA, class rank, extracurricular activities, and recommendations from high school teachers and/or counselors.

What activities will campers be involved in?

Lectures on engineering: These are one- to two-hour sessions covering the work performed in the different fields of engineering. They include both experimental and applied work. Further arrangements can be made with a faculty member in most engineering departments for academic guidance.

Individual and library research: The library facilities will be made available to all participants. An introductory lecture on the use of the Missouri S&T library and computer center will be given.

General orientation: Orientation sessions will be held to discuss admission requirements and procedures; how and when to apply for scholarships and other forms of financial aid; student government and social organizations, and other campus resources.

What to bring: Go here for a list of what to bring to camp.

Housing/meals: Students will live on campus and eat in a Missouri S&T dining facility. There are washers and dryers, vending machines, video games, lounges and an information center. 

Clothing: In the summer there is no conformity to any type of dress on campus.  Dress is generally casual, but should be regulated by common sense, decency and appropriateness.  Rolla’s summer temperatures are generally in the 80’s during the day and 60’s at night.  Shorts are allowed.

Recreation: The Missouri S&T multi-purpose facilities are open to all participants.  Possible activities are swimming, weight training, basketball, handball, racquetball, tennis and softball.  Bring your tennis shoes if you wish to participate in any particular sport. Game rooms and pool tables are available at the Havener Center.

Hours: For the safety of the students and to help ensure a productive program, an 11 p.m. curfew will be enforced during the week.

Social activities: Activities such as bowling, dances, picnics, etc., are set up to provide social interaction among program participants and current Missouri S&T students.
