Summer Transportation Institute

Rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors

Learn about a variety of aspects of the transportation industry through hands-on laboratories, seminars and field trips. This program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Curriculum Includes

  • Seminars on career opportunities in transportation
  • Hands-on laboratories in which you'll design software, mix and test concrete samples and learn about asphalt components
  • Field trips to Kansas City, Universal Challenge Center, St. Louis Transportation Museum and St. Louis's Metrolink
  • Truck driver simulations and tour of Black Hawk Helicopter facility at Fort Leonard Wood
  • Recreational activities including a ropes course, indoor and outdoor group games, pool parties and picnics

Early submission of your application is suggested. STI is a grant-funded program with limited space available.

Eligibility:  Applicants should be entering their sophomore, junior or senior year of high school in August 2010.

Qualifications:  Participants are selected based on their academic achievement, expression of interest in transportation as a possible career choice, and a written recommendation from the student's high school counselor and/or instructors.

Application Process:  Participating students are awarded a scholarship that covers room and board as well as any travel expenses associated with the field trips for the two week program. Scholarships will be awarded on May 1, 2010. Applicants will be notified of acceptance and must then accept the scholarship by registering no later than May 31, 2010.

Cancellation Policy:  Missouri S&T reserves the right to cancel any program in the event of insufficient registrations, severe weather or natural disaster. In the event of cancellation, registrants will be notified immediately via email and phone, and all fees will be returned in full. Persons wishing to cancel their registration must do so one week (7 full days) prior to the first day of their chosen program. No refunds will be made after this date.
